Southern Copper Surges Past S&P 500 Amid Copper Price Boom
Southern Copper Corporation (SCCO) has seen significant growth in its stock price and profits, outperforming the S&P 500 Index ($SPX) by over 15% this year. The company's second-quarter net sales reached a record $4.289 billion, up 40.6% from last year, while net income rose 71.6% to $1.67 billion.
The high copper prices have contributed to the company's success, with COMEX copper futures reaching a record near $6.90 per pound in August. Southern Copper has a strong growth plan in place, aiming to increase annual copper production to about 1.6 million tons by 2033 through its own project pipeline.
The company recently raised its quarterly cash dividend to $1.10 per share, providing a supported dividend for investors. However, the stock's premium valuation and analyst targets pointing below the current share price argue for patience.
