Spain Ponders Repatriating Its Gold Amid Growing Concerns
Spain's central bank holds approximately 289 tonnes of gold, making it the sixth-largest gold reserve among EU countries. The Bank of Spain has refused to disclose how much gold is stored in New York or comment on plans to move it, citing confidentiality.
Despite this, a growing number of voices are pushing for repatriation. Instituto de Estudios Bursátiles professor Luis Garvía believes bringing the gold home would not be a nationalist policy, but rather part of the European Union's strategic autonomy framework.
The repatriation movement has gained momentum in recent years, with countries such as the Netherlands and France bringing their gold back from foreign vaults. The Bank of England refused to release Venezuela's gold stored in London when it tried to bring it home, highlighting concerns about safety.
