Spain's Energy Security on Thin Ice as Geopolitics Intensify

Spain's energy security has become increasingly precarious due to the weaponization of energy access as a tool of geopolitical coercion. The country faces two structurally different risk profiles depending on whether the conversation centres on crude oil or natural gas, and conflating them leads to misleading conclusions about national resilience.

The Trump trade threat and Spain's energy security question has moved from theoretical concern to pressing policy challenge, shaped by a confluence of factors that make the country's position more precarious than its surface-level diversification statistics suggest. The US supplied approximately 20% of Spain's crude oil imports in 2025, but removing U.S. supply from Spain's refining system would require sourcing not just replacement volume but also replacement quality across multiple crude categories simultaneously.

The Strait of Hormuz crisis accelerated Spain's dependence on non-Middle Eastern supply, complicating the geopolitical picture. The compositional shift was significant: Iraqi barrels disappeared from Spain's import slate in April 2026, while Kazakh CPC Blend arrivals quadrupled to approximately 140,000 b/d and Mexican supply rose sharply.

Natural gas is the domain where Spain's energy security position is genuinely fragile. US LNG supplied approximately 30% of Spain's total gas imports in 2025, nearly doubling its 2024 market share. The most immediate threat to Spain's gas supply may not arise from formal U.S. trade restrictions but from commercially motivated cargo diversions by U.S. LNG portfolio operators responding to Asian price premiums.
