Spanish Household Electricity Bills Surge by 19% in Most Expensive August Since 2022
The electricity bill for households has increased by over 19% in August compared to the same month last year, making it the most expensive August since 2022. The average monthly bill under the regulated tariff (PVPC) has risen to €88.81 from €74.04 in August 2025.
The increase is driven by higher electricity prices due to increased demand during heatwaves and rising natural gas costs. Despite the growing weight of solar generation, combined cycles play a key role in covering consumption, transferring the cost of gas to the wholesale price.
Spain's wholesale electricity market, or 'pool', recorded an average daily price above €118/MWh in August, its highest record since February 2023. The 'pool' has traded above €100/MWh on average daily for almost the entire month.
