Spanish Households Face 20% Electricity Bill Hike in August
The electricity bill for households in August is expected to surge by more than 20% compared to last year, driven by increased demand and high gas prices. According to recent data, the regulated tariff (PVPC) has already seen a 22% increase this month, with the average consumer's bill standing at 61.33 euros, up from 50 euros in the same period last year.
The price hike is largely due to the high cost of natural gas, which has pushed above 65 euros per megawatt hour (MWh) in August. The wholesale electricity market price, also known as the 'pool', has averaged over 124 euros/MWh this month, its highest level since February 2023.
The Spanish government had implemented measures to mitigate the impact of high energy prices earlier this year, but these have been largely reversed due to a rise in gas costs. A safeguard mechanism is in place to reactivate certain measures if prices increase by more than 15%, which could see the VAT on electricity reduced from 21% to 10% and the Special Tax on Electricity decrease from 5.1% to 0.5%.
