Sri Lanka Braces for Climate Risks Amid Strong El Niño Conditions
Sri Lanka is bracing itself for elevated climate and food-system risks due to strong El Niño conditions, rising costs, and possible heavy rainfall during the upcoming Maha cultivation season, according to a UN report.
The Asia-Pacific assessment has placed Sri Lanka among countries of 'elevated concern', with above-average rainfall predicted from October as the Second Inter-Monsoon begins. While additional rain could help replenish reservoirs, excessive rainfall during Maha planting may cause flooding, waterlogging, and delays to agricultural activities.
The report warns that high fuel and fertilizer costs will intensify the impact on food production, with diesel and petrol prices remaining 44% and 41% above pre-Middle East crisis levels, respectively. Sri Lanka also remains exposed to imported fertilizer and international wheat prices.
