St. Albert artist Bruce Allen is closing his studio at the Visual Arts Studio Association (VASA) after decades of painting and mentoring young artists.

Allen, who turns 78 in August, will continue to paint watercolours from home, having given up oil painting due to its labour-intensive nature.

'My biggest passion is oil painting, it's just a bit too labour intensive,' Allen said. 'So I gave all my oil paints away to my nephew.'

Allen's love of art began early on, with his first experiments involving model cars. He later moved into watercolours and then oils, drawing inspiration from the neighbourhoods, houses, and details he encountered in Alberta.

'I've always dabbled in art ever since I was a wee young'un,' Allen said.
