Staple Food Prices Rise Amid Global Heatwaves and Energy Price Hikes
Global staple food prices rose by one percent in July compared to the same month last year, according to new data from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
The increase is attributed to heatwaves and ongoing geopolitical uncertainty that have impacted energy prices worldwide.
Sugar prices led the surge with a 5.6% jump in July, mainly due to concerns about the potential impacts of hot and dry weather on crop yields in key producing countries in Asia.
Other commodities experiencing significant price increases include cereals (up 3.4% from June), wheat (up 5.8%), and maize (up 3.6%).
