Startup Fights Palm Oil's Environmental Toll with Sustainable Fermentation
NoPalm Ingredients, a Dutch startup based in Wageningen, is making waves in the food industry by producing oils and fats through fermentation. The company, co-funded by the European Innovation Council, aims to decouple the production of oils and fats from land use.
Palm oil is currently found in over 50% of mass-market packaged products due to its versatility, stability, and cost-effectiveness. However, global demand for palm oil is growing at a rate of 4% per year, which would require deforestation equivalent to an area 1.5 times the size of Ireland by 2030 if met through plantation expansion.
NoPalm Ingredients' solution involves fermenting food industry waste, such as potato peelings and vegetable scraps, into lipids that are functionally equivalent to palm oil, shea butter, or cocoa butter. The company's products, marketed under the REVÓLEO brand, are designed as direct substitutes for palm oil in various applications.
NoPalm Ingredients is building a global network of decentralised plants, located directly at manufacturers' sites and close to raw material sources, to reduce dependence on complex global supply chains while ensuring traceability and resilience.
