Stocks Plummet as Oil Prices Soar and Bond Yields Rise
Global stock markets declined on Monday as oil prices surged and government bond yields rose. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 0.48%, while the S&P 500 dropped 0.78%. The Nasdaq Composite plummeted 1.09%, with the Philadelphia chip index declining by a significant 5%.
The decline in stocks was attributed to concerns about the impact of high oil prices on consumers, as well as rising bond yields. Brent futures increased by 4% to $108.83 per barrel, while diesel, gasoline, and jet fuel prices are significantly higher than before the Iran war.
Saudi Arabia's East-West Pipeline was temporarily shut down due to a drone attack, which threatens up to 4% of global oil supply. This development added to the concerns about oil prices and their impact on the economy.
