Stocks Under Pressure as Crude Oil Prices Soar
Stocks are under pressure today due to soaring crude oil prices, which have boosted bond yields and complicated the US inflation outlook. The S&P 500 Index is down by -0.42%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average has fallen to a 1-week low.
The rise in crude oil prices is attributed to renewed Middle East tensions, with WTI crude oil up more than +2% at a 1-week high. This surge in prices has also boosted inflation expectations, leading to higher bond yields. The 10-year T-note yield jumped to a 19-month high of 4.75%, while European government bond yields have also moved higher.
Despite the negative impact on stocks, Q2 earnings results are expected to be bullish for the market. The S&P 500 is tracking for earnings growth of almost 32% in Q2, with AI spending accounting for a significant portion of this growth. Energy producers and service providers have also seen gains today due to the rise in crude oil prices.
