Strait of Hormuz Becomes Critical Battleground in US-Iran Conflict

The Strait of Hormuz has become a critical battleground in the ongoing conflict between the US and Iran, threatening global energy supplies and economic stability.

The situation escalated after the US reimposed a blockade on Iranian ports and conducted airstrikes against Tehran's radar, missile facilities, UAVs, and coastal command systems. In response, Iran imposed its own maritime control regime, inspecting and diverting ships deemed to be in violation of its rules.

The confrontation has led to significant disruptions in oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, with only one tanker passing through on July 24, the lowest level since early May. The US Central Command rejected Iran's claim of complete control over the strait, asserting that commercial ships could still navigate with US support.

The crisis has accelerated a redrawing of energy maps and security alliances in the Gulf region, with international energy experts predicting that world oil prices could exceed $120 per barrel if shipping lanes across the Red Sea are severely disrupted. The situation is more critical as Houthi forces have declared a maritime blockade against Saudi Arabia, attacking oil tankers and threatening oil and gas facilities.

The US and UK are discussing convening a conference in London to consider forming an international coalition to protect shipping through the Hormuz, but this idea is unlikely to receive strong support. Many European countries fear being drawn into a conflict they did not choose, while Asian countries want to protect their supply lines but avoid openly taking sides.
