Strait of Hormuz Tanker Traffic Hits Record Low Amid US-Iran Tensions
Tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remained sluggish over the weekend as tensions between Iran and the United States continued to escalate. According to data from Kpler, only 13 vessels passed through the strait on Saturday, with just four making the journey on Sunday.
This is a significant drop compared to previous days, with 16 tankers passing through on Friday and one very large crude carrier exiting Hormuz on Thursday.
Over the week ending August 21, a total of 103 vessels entered the Strait of Hormuz while 89 exited it. Of these, 45% were tankers, with oil tankers making up 56% of that number.
The UK Maritime Trade Operations reported that traffic through the strait is approximately 90% below pre-conflict baselines and has been declining since a peak in June.
