Strait of Hormuz Uncertainty Sends Oil Prices Soaring
Oil prices surged over 6% as uncertainty surrounding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz persists. The waterway's closure led to a decline in oil shipments, causing oil prices to plummet last week.
A proposed agreement between Iran and Oman aimed at temporarily restoring shipping through the strait was met with skepticism by Tehran, which demanded greater control over shipping routes and transit fees for vessels passing through.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that talks with Oman on defining new shipping lanes are in their 'final stages,' but an agreement on shipping routes alone would not reopen the waterway.
Tehran is seeking sanctions relief, compensation for war damage, and security guarantees before agreeing to a lasting arrangement. US President Donald Trump pushed back against Tehran's demands, saying Washington would instead seek compensation for people killed or wounded in attacks he blamed on Iran.
