Strat of Hormuz Tensions Escalate, Oil Prices Surge
The Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global oil supplies, has become a battleground in the escalating tensions between the US and Iran. The conflict is driving up oil prices, with Brent crude exceeding $100 per barrel on Wednesday. According to Mona Yacoubian, director at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), 'the harder the U.S. pushes to get the strait back open, the harder Iran pushes back, leading to heightened escalation, fewer ships passing, and higher oil prices as a result.'
The US has been attempting to reopen the passageway through military means, but this has only led to increased tensions with Iran. The Trump administration's efforts have included airstrikes on Iranian vessels and shipping lanes, as well as sanctions against Iranian airlines and companies tied to the IRGC.
Iran has responded by targeting US assets and ships in the region, including a reported attack on two US warships. Tehran also launched ballistic missiles towards a US base in eastern Jordan, further escalating the conflict.
