Sudan's Economic Crisis Bites Hard: Omdurman Food Prices Soar

Food prices in Omdurman have surged by 20 to 25 percent over the past month, causing further pressure on households already struggling with Sudan's economic crisis. A kilogram of sugar now costs around SDG5,000, up from SDG4,500-4,800 last month.

A litre of cooking oil has risen to SDG12,000, while a kilogram of flour sells for around SDG4,000. Residents report that prices are changing daily and vary sharply between shops.

The El Malha Emergency Room in North Darfur has warned that disrupted supply routes and soaring food prices could push the region towards famine as the rainy season approaches.

Raja Mohamed Abkar of the emergency room said families have been forced to sell livestock at low prices to buy food, while shortages of basic commodities have emptied markets in El Malha and surrounding villages.
