Sudan's North Darfur Crisis Worsens with 40% Food Price Hikes

Residents in Omdurman, Sudan are facing rising food prices due to supply disruptions and shortages. According to Allafrica, essential goods have increased by 20-25% over the past month, with some items like sugar and cooking oil seeing price hikes of over 40%. In El Thawra neighborhood, a kilogram of sugar now costs around SDG5,000, up from SDG4,800 last month.

Dairy products have also become more expensive, with powdered milk selling for SDG31,000-SDG32,000 per kilogram and cheese rising to SDG22,000 per kilogram. The El Malha Emergency Room warned that supply disruptions could push the region towards famine as the rainy season approaches.

The Ed Debba-Mellit road is closed, leaving markets in El Malha and nearby villages nearly empty of grain and essentials. Residents are selling livestock at low prices to buy food, while others rely on humanitarian aid due to the lack of fresh produce for two to three months.
