Suncor Holds Off on Accelerating Production Amid Government Support

Suncor Energy's CEO Rich Kruger said on Wednesday that his company is not yet ready to accelerate production growth, despite recent policy reforms by the Canadian and Alberta governments aimed at boosting the oil industry. The comments highlight uncertainty around whether the federal government's more favorable stance towards energy will lead to increased investment and output in Canada, which is the world's fourth-largest oil producer.

The company's outlook has not changed since its March investor day, Kruger said on a conference call. He added that there is still much work to be done to turn last month's memorandum of understanding between the oil sands industry and governments into definitive agreements enshrined in legislation.

Major oil sands CEOs, including Kruger, signed a non-binding agreement with Alberta and Canada in July to outline conditions for the advancement of a carbon capture and storage project known as Pathways, which would reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the oil sands. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has endorsed Alberta's vision of a new 1 million barrel per day export pipeline to the Pacific coast, but said his support is contingent on the Pathways project moving forward.

While Suncor retains the option to ramp up production faster if desired, Kruger emphasized that the company wants to be thoughtful before committing to any acceleration of its growth plans. The company had previously announced plans to grow upstream production by about 100,000 bpd by 2028, up from 840,000 to 870,000 bpd expected for 2026.
