Sunni Allies Unite Against Regional Threats Under Mecca Defense Pact
Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan have formed mechanisms under the Mecca defense agreement signed last week. The three countries signed the 'Mecca Joint Defense Agreement' on August 7, uniting Sunni-Muslim US allies concerned about regional conflicts that brought Iranian missile fire onto Gulf oil exporters.
The pact stipulates that an armed attack against any member would be regarded as an attack on all, similar to NATO's Article 5 collective defense clause. The three countries will form political and military mechanisms under the agreement, including their defense ministers, foreign ministers, and military chiefs.
The joint military exercises are also being planned under the pact, while cooperation could include joint production and technology sharing in the defense industry. This development is part of a broader effort to strengthen regional alliances and counterbalance emerging threats.
