Supertanker Turns Back as Houthi Threat Looms Over Red Sea

A supertanker named New Champion has made an unexpected U-turn in the Gulf of Aden while traveling to the Red Sea Port of Yanbu in Saudi Arabia. The ship, chartered by a Chinese buyer, was likely attempting to avoid being attacked after recent strikes on ships associated with Saudi Arabia by the Iran-backed Houthi Group.

The tanker's decision to turn back is seen as a response to increasing risks in the region. In fact, some insurance providers have hesitated to offer coverage for ships going to Saudi Arabia due to the risk of attacks.

This incident highlights the impact of the Houthi naval blockade on Saudi Arabia and the challenges it poses for Chinese buyers seeking to access Saudi oil. Despite these risks, China-bound tankers continue to receive around 520,000 barrels per day from Yanbu in 2026, a figure that has risen despite the U.S-Iran war.

New Champion's decision is notable as the first Chinese vessel to change course due to increasing risks in the region. Other ships have taken longer routes through the Suez Canal and around Africa to avoid the southern exit of the Strait.
