Supply Chain Crisis Fuels Biggest Crop Price Jump Since 2012
Crop prices are surging due to wars and extreme weather that have disrupted supplies. The Bloomberg Agriculture Spot Index has risen by over 13% in August, its biggest monthly gain since July 2012.
The index's increase is driven by wheat, sugar, and cocoa, with prices reaching a three-year high for wheat. Black Sea port attacks have slashed shipments from the major growing region, exacerbating supply chain issues.
Ukraine and Russia, which account for over 25% of global wheat exports, are experiencing reduced grain exports due to the ongoing conflict. Ukraine's agriculture ministry expects farmers to plant less winter-wheat for the 2027 season.
