Suriname's Oil Boom Takes Off with $26 Billion GranMorgu Project
Suriname's oil industry is experiencing a significant boost due to the ongoing turmoil in Middle East energy markets. The country's emerging petroleum boom was delayed by conflicting drilling results and seismic data, but it has finally paid off with several major oil discoveries.
The GranMorgu project, operated by TotalEnergies, will come online in 2028 and is expected to generate up to $26 billion in fiscal income for Suriname. The project's floating production, storage, and offloading unit (FPSO) vessel will have a capacity of 220,000 barrels per day.
The GranMorgu project targets the Sapakara and Krabdagu discoveries, which contain estimated recoverable resources of 760 million barrels of crude oil. The petroleum encountered in Suriname is believed to possess similar qualities to Guyana's oil, which has a low sulfur content and is sweet.
