Swartland Grain Producers Face Challenging Season Amidst Poor Rainfall
Grain SA CEO Tobias Doyer expressed concerns about the challenging season facing many grain producers in the Swartland region, citing poor rainfall, weak grain prices, and high input costs.
The 92nd Swartland Show, which took place from September 3 to 5, provided a platform for farmers to share ideas and navigate difficult seasons. However, Doyer noted that the mood among producers was heavier than usual this year due to disappointing rainfall and uncertainty about yields in parts of the region.
Speaking with farmers across the Swartland, Doyer observed that many were facing real challenges, particularly in areas such as Eendekuil where there is very little crop left. He also highlighted structural challenges affecting the Western Cape grain industry, including insufficient tariff protection against imports and access to newer cultivars and crop protection technologies.
