Syria Achieves Wheat Self-Sufficiency, Eyes Export Opportunities

After years of struggling to produce enough wheat, Syria has finally achieved complete self-sufficiency in the crop for the 2026 harvest season. According to the Syrian Grain Establishment, the country collected approximately 2.72 million tons of domestic wheat from farmers across agricultural provinces, exceeding the baseline annual consumption requirement of roughly 2.55 million tons.

The strong harvest marks a dramatic recovery compared to the severely depressed production levels recorded in recent years, with favorable weather conditions, expanded planting areas, and targeted agricultural incentives contributing to the rebound.

To facilitate smooth procurement, public grain authorities deployed digital logistics platforms for farmer appointment bookings, streamlined entry and sampling procedures at state silos, provided financial bonuses, and waived technical analysis fees for producers.

With grain production recovering toward pre-conflict averages of 3.5 to 4 million tons annually, agricultural authorities project that continued investments in irrigation, farm inputs, and post-harvest technology could soon transition Syria from basic self-sufficiency to a sustainable net-exporting agricultural economy.
