Syria Harvests Record Wheat Crop Amid Calls for Long-Term Food Security Strategy

Approximately 2.7 million tons of wheat were harvested in Syria, bringing the country closer to self-sufficiency after years of severe damage to its grain sector due to war, drought, and agricultural infrastructure decline.

The Syrian Future Movement views these results as a positive indicator worthy of appreciation, particularly for the Syrian farmer who has maintained his production capacity despite hardships, rising costs, and difficulties with water, energy, and marketing.

However, they emphasize that a bountiful harvest in one season does not guarantee sustainable food security. Food security is measured by the state's ability to ensure continued production, protect producers, and secure a strategic reserve capable of withstanding years of drought, crises, and market fluctuations.

The Syrian Future Movement believes it is necessary to work on developing a multi-year national wheat strategy that defines needs, production, reserves, import, and export policies. They also stress the need for fair prices, improved seeds, fertilizers, irrigation networks, silo rehabilitation, and an accurate agricultural data system.
