Syrian Farmers Chafe at Delayed Wheat Payments Amid Mounting Debts
Hasakah farmers in northeastern Syria are calling for an end to installment payments of wheat due to mounting debts and rising agricultural production costs.
Farmers delivered their crops approximately two and a half months ago, but have still not received their financial dues, despite the government's promise that payment would be completed by August 1st.
The Cooperative Agricultural Bank began disbursing payments for farmers' invoices on August 13th, but under the approved payment mechanism, only those with invoices worth less than 1 million Syrian pounds receive full payment.
Farmers are demanding full payment of their dues and are calling on the transitional government to find a solution that would ensure they receive their full due as quickly as possible. If it is unable to pay for the crops, they want them returned to their owners.
