Tajikistan Turns to Iran Amid Russian Fuel Shortages
Tajikistan is facing a severe fuel crisis due to Russia's ban on diesel, gasoline, and jet fuel exports, except for inter-governmental supply agreements in place. The country has requested Iran to import Iranian oil and petroleum products to meet its fuel needs.
The Transport Ministry of Tajikistan stated that more than 80% of the country's fuel previously came from Russia. With the crisis in Russia, Tajikistan is unable to tap Russian diesel and gasoline. As a result, it has turned to Iran for alternative supplies.
Tajikistan signed over a dozen cooperation agreements with Iran during a meeting between senior Iranian government officials and the Transport Minister of Tajikistan, Azim Ibrohim. The country plans to import 2.55 million tons of oil and fuels from Iran, including 2 million tons of crude oil, 150,000 tons of gasoline, 300,000 tons of diesel, and 100,000 tons of jet fuel.
