Tanzania's energy minister Deogratius Ndejembi is confident that the country will achieve universal electricity access by 2030. With 85.5% of the population now having access to electricity, up from 78.4% in 2020, and connectivity rising to 52.1%, Ndejembi attributes this progress to partnerships with private developers and investors.

The minister notes that these partnerships have contributed about 486 MW to the national grid through various energy sources, including solar, wind, biomass, coal, and natural gas. Although gas remains the backbone of Tanzania's power generation, accounting for around 63% of total supply, renewables are gaining ground.

Ndejembi emphasizes that the 'Power System Master Plan 2024' outlines investment priorities to balance natural gas with renewable sources and ensure reliable, affordable electricity. The government is also investing in transmission and distribution infrastructure under the 'Gridi Imara Project', a nationwide initiative costing TZS 4.4 trillion ($1.9bn).

Tanzania has significant potential as a regional energy hub, with 57 trillion cubic feet of natural gas reserves. Ndejembi reveals that negotiations are underway to advance strategic projects, including liquefied natural gas (LNG), compressed natural gas (CNG), and distribution infrastructure.
