Tanzania Follows Ghana's Lead in Gold Market Reforms
Tanzania has been encouraged to follow Ghana's lead in transforming its mineral resources into a national financial asset. The country's gold production has long been seen as a means of generating export revenue, but this approach has limitations. A report highlights that increasing gold production does not directly translate to greater national wealth due to issues like foreign-exchange shortages and limited industrial growth.
Ghana's GoldBod initiative is cited as an example of how a country can reorganize its gold market to position the government as the central authority in transactions involving gold from artisanal and small-scale miners. This approach has enabled Ghana to cut down on smuggling, formalise the industry, boost government revenue, enhance traceability, and reinforce gold's significance in foreign exchange and reserves.
The Bank of Tanzania (BoT) has initiated a domestic gold purchase scheme, enabling the central bank to buy locally produced gold using Tanzanian shillings. This move is seen as an important policy change that can help increase monetary gold reserves and strengthen the country's foreign reserves.
