Tanzania Seeks Edible Oil Self-Sufficiency Amid Global Disruptions

Tanzania is joining the global trend towards edible oil self-sufficiency in response to geopolitical disruptions, such as the Covid-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war. Dr. Florence Turuka, executive secretary of the Presidential Food and Agriculture Advisory Council, said African leaders resolved to accelerate food and edible oil production following these vulnerabilities.

The drive towards 'oil sovereignty' was a dominant theme at the Edible Oil Investment Forum in Dodoma on July 30, 2026. The forum brought together government officials, financiers, and industry leaders who argued that domestic production is now a strategic national priority due to dependence on imported commodities.

The Tanzania government has identified edible oil as one of five strategic value chains to strengthen national food security and cushion the economy against external shocks. According to Dr. Turuka, Indonesia's decision to stop exporting products in raw form by 2030 will further affect countries relying on crude edible oil imports from Southeast Asia.

Agriculture Transformation Office (ATO) investment officer Dr. Juma Makaranga emphasized the need for Tanzania to shift focus from the market back to production and invest in plantation farming and modern seed varieties to bridge a looming supply gap.
