Tanzania Seeks Global Gas-Rich Status with Over $50 Trillion in Reserves

Tanzania is seeking to advance its natural resources and claim a significant role in global gas production, according to Deputy Minister for Energy Salome Makamba.

Makamba made this statement at the Gastech 2026 conference in Bangkok, Thailand, where she participated in a panel discussion on the future of gas supply.

The country currently has more than 57 trillion cubic feet of discovered natural gas reserves, with a significant portion located in deep offshore areas.

Tanzania's experience has shown that having large natural gas reserves alone is not enough to create value. Makamba emphasized the importance of transforming resources into reliable and competitive energy that drives economic development.
