Tanzania Unveils Cross-Border Gas Pipeline Plan to Fuel Regional Growth
Tanzania is planning to develop a cross-border natural gas pipeline that will supply both Uganda and Kenya, positioning the country as a long-term regional gas supplier rather than solely an exporter of liquefied natural gas to overseas markets.
The announcement was made by Charles Sangweni, Director General of Tanzania's Petroleum Upstream Regulatory Authority (PURA), at the Second African Youth in Oil and Gas International Conference in Zanzibar. The pipeline will be a single cross-border pipeline supplying both countries.
This move is part of a broader regional network, as Tanzania and Uganda are already partners on the East African Crude Oil Pipeline, which carries crude rather than gas. Kenya and Tanzania have also previously agreed to study a natural gas connection between Dar es Salaam and Mombasa.
