Tanzania Unveils First Small-Scale LNG Project to Bolster Energy Security
Tanzania is on track to develop its first small-scale liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility, a project that aims to process locally produced natural gas into LNG for distribution to customers not connected to the existing pipeline system. The East Africa LNG (EALNG) project has secured a Gas Sales Agreement (GSA) between TAQA Arabia's subsidiary Rosetta Energy Solutions, Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC), and Africa50.
The agreement is expected to support the development of the facility, which will start commercial operations in 2027. The project targets industrial, residential, and transport customers who currently rely on more expensive fuels with higher emissions. TPDC will supply the natural gas required by the facility and hold an equity interest in the project.
TAQA Arabia CEO Pakinam Kafafi said the development would help transform Tanzania's natural gas reserves into a reliable source of energy for businesses, households, and the transport sector. The increased domestic gas use could contribute to improved energy security and support the country's industrialization efforts.
