Teck Resources Crushes Earnings Expectations on Copper Supercycle
Teck Resources (TECK.B:CA) has delivered a strong earnings beat in its second-quarter results, driven by the global copper demand cycle. The company reported adjusted earnings per share of C$1.93, significantly above analyst expectations of approximately C$1.41.
The revenue surge was 78.7% year-over-year to C$3.61 billion, while adjusted EBITDA more than tripled to C$2.2 billion, demonstrating substantial operating leverage from higher commodity prices. Strong cash generation also strengthened the company's financial position, with operating cash flow reaching C$1.7 billion and total liquidity expanding to approximately C$10.3 billion.
The primary driver behind the improved performance was the continued strength in copper markets, with prices rising approximately 40% year-over-year during the quarter. Copper's importance as a critical input for electrification, renewable energy infrastructure, artificial intelligence data centers, and global grid expansion has created a favorable long-term demand outlook.
Teck's copper-focused strategy positions the company to benefit from what many analysts view as a structural supply-demand imbalance in the commodity. The proposed merger with Anglo American further strengthens the long-term investment thesis by potentially creating a globally significant critical minerals producer with increased scale, diversified assets, and enhanced ability to execute major copper expansion projects.
