Tehran and Qatar Agree on Hormuz Passage as Venezuela Considers OPEC Exit
Negotiations are underway to maintain free passage through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil-shipping route. Iran has announced plans to draft conditions for restoring 'normal traffic' in the region.
The Strait of Hormuz is a key chokepoint for oil shipping, and any hint of disruption can lead to higher crude prices due to a 'just-in-case' premium. However, this time around, the market remained calm, with WTI slipping 0.2% to $83.39 a barrel and Brent falling 0.4% to $89.33.
A Qatari envoy urged Tehran to respect freedom of navigation, and Iran agreed to draw up conditions for regular passage, indicating that diplomacy is moving in the right direction. Meanwhile, Venezuela has discussed with US officials the possibility of leaving OPEC, which could signal a weakening of the cartel's unity.
