Tenerife Port Expands LNG Options with Tanker Trucks

The Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has successfully conducted its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply operation to a vessel via tank trucks. The operation, which began at 12:30 PM at the Anaga Dock, was carried out by ESK and involved supplying 600 MWh of LNG using two tank trucks with a total pumping flow of 700 liters per minute.

The new modality, known as Multi Truck to Ship (MTTS), allows simultaneous supply of fuel from several trucks to the ship's tanks. This is an expansion on the existing Ship to Ship (STS) modality, which enables direct fuel replenishment between two vessels.

The Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has been working with Baleària Canarias shipping group and ESK to implement this new modality, which responds to Baleària's need for an alternative LNG supply in Tenerife. The operation is seen as a step towards sustainability and innovation in the maritime transport sector.

The Mercedes Pinto, a fast ferry operated by Baleària, was the recipient of the LNG supply. This vessel is designed for efficient navigation and has dual engines prepared to consume natural gas and biogas, which are neutral in CO₂ emissions.
