Tensions Persist as Iran Holds Strait of Hormuz Hostage

The Strait of Hormuz remains closed, and Iran has set conditions for its reopening. Tehran demands an end to US naval blockades of Iranian ports and hostile military activities in the region before allowing full commercial shipping to resume through the waterway.

This critical chokepoint handles roughly 20% of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas trade, effectively bottlenecking a fifth of the world's petroleum supply. The Strait was closed following US and Israeli strikes on February 28, 2026.

A memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran for a 60-day toll-free reopening was signed on June 17, 2026, but it collapsed in July after attacks on vessels transiting the waterway and fresh rounds of US sanctions against Iran.
