Tensions Rise as Saudi Arabia Intercepts Drones Launched from Iraq
Saudi Arabia's air defenses intercepted and destroyed several drones launched from Iraqi territory that attempted to target oil facilities in the Eastern Province, according to a statement by Saudi defense ministry spokesperson Turki al-Maliki on X. This incident marks the second such attack in less than two days, raising tensions between Riyadh and Baghdad.
Al-Maliki attributed the drone attacks to Iran-backed militias, which Tehran has denied involvement in past attacks on Saudi oil infrastructure. The Eastern Province is home to much of Saudi Arabia's oil production and export infrastructure.
Saudi Arabia reserves the right to defend itself and its national capabilities and retains the right to respond 'at the appropriate time and place,' al-Maliki said.
