Tether Surpasses $18B in Gold Holdings with Record 146 Tonnes Purchase
Tether, the issuer of the widely used stablecoin USDT, has significantly expanded its gold holdings, purchasing an additional 14 tonnes during the second quarter. This brings Tether's total reported reserves to a record 146 tonnes, valued at approximately $18.8 billion.
The company's decision to increase its gold position reflects its growing interest in diversifying its assets beyond traditional cash and short-term government securities. Gold has historically been viewed as a store of value and a hedge against inflation, currency volatility, and financial instability.
Tether's expanding gold holdings have made it the largest known private holder of physical gold outside central banks and governments. The company's treasury strategy is becoming increasingly diversified, with exposure to multiple forms of value beyond government securities and cash.
