Tether Surpasses Central Banks in Gold Holdings Amid Market Rally
Tether's gold holdings have been on a steady rise, doubling in just 18 months to become the largest private holder of gold outside of central banks and governments.
The stablecoin issuer purchased an additional 14 tonnes of gold during the second quarter of 2026, bringing its total holdings to a record 146 tonnes worth approximately $18.8 billion.
This follows gold acquisitions of 53 tonnes between Q3 2025 and Q1 2026, with Tether's gold holdings more than doubling since Q1 2025 while their value has nearly tripled over the same period.
Tether is now a significant player in the gold market, competing with nation-states for physical bullion after the correction. In the first half of 2026, only four central banks bought more gold than Tether: Poland, Uzbekistan, China, and Kazakhstan.
