Thailand Ditches LNG for Renewable Energy Amid Global Turmoil
Thailand's energy strategy is undergoing a significant shift in response to global events. The country plans to reduce its reliance on imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) and transition towards cleaner, more sustainable sources of power.
The government aims to generate 60% of its electricity from clean energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydro within the next 25 years. This target is double the previous goal, announced in an updated 25-year national power plan set for release in October.
Energy Minister Akanat Promphan emphasized the need to reduce imports of LNG and other fuels following the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which caused a surge in seaborne LNG prices. Thailand currently generates over 60% of its electricity from natural gas, leaving it vulnerable to external shocks.
