Thune Says Compromises Needed for Year-Round E15 Sales in Senate
US Senator John Thune says that for year-round E15 sales to pass in the Senate, compromises will be needed on small oil refineries' exemptions from the Renewable Fuel Standard.
E15 is a higher ethanol-blended gasoline made primarily from corn, and supporters argue it would strengthen the farm economy and increase energy independence. However, opponents point out that emissions from E15 could worsen summer smog and encourage grasslands conversion for corn farming.
Thune listed lawmakers from states with small oil refiners as key to passing year-round E15 sales, including Montana, Wyoming, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Tennessee.
