Tiger Brands Ditches Diesel with CNG Fleet Upgrade
Tiger Brands is expanding its efforts to reduce emissions and improve efficiency by introducing compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks into its Albany bread distribution fleet. The company has added 14 CNG vehicles, which have a single-trip range of about 480 km, to the fleet operating from its Albany Germiston Bakery in Johannesburg.
The R12-million investment is part of Tiger Brands' long-term strategy to diversify its transport energy mix and reduce reliance on diesel. The company aims to transition 10% of its fleet to alternative-fuel vehicles over the next five years, while piloting electric, hybrid, and solar-powered vehicle technologies.
The CNG trucks are supported by a dedicated fuelling point installed on site, allowing for efficient refuelling and minimizing downtime. Tiger Brands' Bakeries MD Quinton Swart says that the introduction of CNG vehicles will deliver meaningful benefits to the business and consumers alike, including lower fuel costs, reduced exposure to diesel price volatility, and improved fleet efficiency.
