Nigeria's President Bola Tinubu has called on the management of Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) to maximize economic benefits from the country's gas reserves. The plea comes after it was revealed that Nigeria flared over 203.9 billion standard cubic feet of natural gas in 2025.

Tinubu made the appeal during a meeting with NLNG officials at the State House on August 26, 2026. He emphasized the need for NLNG to prioritize domestic utilization and convert potential environmental liabilities into economic benefits for Nigerians.

The President acknowledged that NLNG has been generating significant revenue by leveraging international interest, but urged the company to focus on benefiting the country's economy. He also tasked NLNG with exploring the domestication of energy requirements and pricing mechanisms to positively impact ordinary citizens.
