Tinubu Orders NLNG to Cut Gas Flaring, Boost Domestic Benefits
Nigeria's President Bola Tinubu has urged Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited (NLNG) to reduce gas flaring and increase domestic consumption of the country's vast gas resources. The President made this call on Wednesday at the State House in Abuja when he received the NLNG Board, led by its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Adeleye Falade.
Tinubu emphasized that while increasing revenue from international LNG markets is important, the company must also ensure that Nigerians benefit more directly from the country's gas wealth. He noted that turning gas that would otherwise be flared into economic value would reduce environmental damage while creating greater benefits for consumers and the wider economy.
Falade informed the President that NLNG had generated over $150 billion since its establishment, with its shareholders, including the Federal Government, receiving approximately $47 billion in dividends. The company currently operates at 83% capacity due to improved oil and gas production, which has enabled it to increase operations from four to five trains.
