Tinubu Pushes NLNG to Maximize Gas Reserves, Reduce Flaring
Nigeria is shifting its climate strategy to capitalize on its natural gas reserves. President Bola Tinubu emphasized this during a meeting with the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) board, urging them to prioritize reducing gas flaring and expanding domestic gas utilization.
This call aligns with ongoing efforts by Nigeria's oil and gas regulators to transform flared gas from an environmental burden into a commercial resource. In 2025, Nigeria flared 6.08 billion cubic meters of gas, a decrease from 80% in 1985 to about 7% today.
The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has implemented measures to credibly measure, report, and verify methane and greenhouse-gas emissions. Nigeria aims to eliminate routine gas flaring by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2060.
