Tinubu Tasks NLNG on Gas Flaring and Domestic Utilization
Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on NLNG to end gas flaring and convert the country's gas reserves into economic benefits for Nigerians. This directive was given during a meeting with the NLNG Board at the State House in Abuja on August 26, 2026. The President emphasized that Nigeria must move beyond increasing revenue from international markets and focus on domestic gas utilization.
Tinubu urged NLNG to eliminate flaring and deploy the resource to meet the country's energy needs, transforming it from an environmental liability into an economic asset. He commended the company for increasing its capacity and improving returns on investment, assuring NLNG of his administration's readiness to provide incentives required to stimulate further growth.
The President also urged NLNG to consider domestication of energy requirements and appropriate pricing mechanisms to ensure that ordinary Nigerians feel the impact of the country's energy resources. The company has generated over $150 billion since inception, with its shareholders, including Nigeria, receiving about $47 billion in dividends. Nigeria holds a 49% stake in NLNG.
