Titas Gas Loses Billions in System Loss as Bangladesh Struggles with Depleted Reserves

Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution PLC, Bangladesh's largest gas utility, is losing significant volumes of gas from its network each year. The company's system loss rate reached 9.47 percent in FY 2024-25, nearly five times the 2 percent ceiling set by the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission.

The cumulative system losses over the past five fiscal years total 4.09 billion cubic meters of gas, equivalent to 45 to 48 LNG cargoes or roughly 10 cargoes a year. This loss is substantial, with the financial value of gas lost through system loss standing at about BDT 81.56 billion over the five-year period.

Titas's managing director, Shahnewaz Parvez, attributed part of the deterioration in system losses to ageing infrastructure increasingly prone to leakage and gas theft. He noted that technical leakage from infrastructure installed about five decades ago accounts for roughly 3.5 percentage points of the total loss.
