Tokyo Households Bracing for Higher Electricity and Gas Bills in September
Tokyo households can expect significant increases in their September electricity and gas bills. According to estimates based on preliminary trade statistics, the standard household electricity bill in Tokyo Electric Power's service area will be approximately ¥8,275, up ¥432 from August. Gas bills in Tokyo Gas's service area are projected to climb by around ¥307.
The surge in energy resource prices, including crude oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG), triggered by worsening conditions in the Middle East is a primary driver of the increases. The government's household relief program for electricity and gas rates will also reduce its per-unit subsidy for September compared to August, further adding to the burden on households.
Both electricity and gas rates are expected to exceed year-earlier levels due to these factors. The government has been providing roughly ¥5,000 in total relief over the three-month period from July through September but this program is set to expire at the end of September, leaving uncertainty over rate levels from October onward.
