TotalEnergies Secures Exemption from EU Sanctions on Russian LNG

TotalEnergies, the French energy giant, has secured an exemption from European Union sanctions that will allow it to continue extracting and selling liquefied natural gas (LNG) from its Yamal project in Siberia.

The exemption comes as a surprise to many, given the EU's efforts to restrict Russian energy exports following the invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

TotalEnergies holds a significant stake in the Yamal LNG project and had been under pressure to abandon its interests in Russia. However, the company has argued that maintaining the flow of Siberian gas to Asia prevents those nations from entering the European spot market, which would trigger a catastrophic price spike across the continent.

The EU's sanctions architecture deliberately provides reprieves for LNG cargoes to balance global supply, and TotalEnergies has successfully argued that its operations in Yamal are essential to preventing a global energy crisis.
